DAS Legal Expenses have been supporting Glenfrome Primary School since Ablaze began in 2005 and their involvement goes way beyond the provision of Reading Buddies – the company arranges visits for the students to their DAS offices and it also sponsored an Aardman Animations “Gromit” and “Gorilla” to be installed at the school last year. Claire Banham, the school’s Reading Recovery Teacher, commented on the last school year’s results: “In Terms 3 and 4, the volunteers read with children who were at average levels in year 2, with the hope that the children may achieve above average in their SAT’s tests. Half of the children were judged to be Level 2A which is above National average and this was helped greatly by the support of DAS volunteers. Terms 5 & 6 saw many children, who were just below average in Year 1, exceed the end of year expectation!” Inger O’Callaghan, Head Teacher, commented “DAS staff worked with 22 children for 10 weeks. In this time, the children went up an average of 4 “Book Level Progress” levels. This is accelerated – the expected progress for children in these year groups is 8 book levels in the whole year. DAS Reading Buddies have helped our children to catch up with their peers”.
